Academic Advising

As a new Golden Grizzly, one of your most critical resources is your academic adviser. Transfer students are assigned to an academic advising unit based on their major, which is housed in a School/College. If you are undecided about your major, you will work with an academic adviser in the First Year Advising Center until you declare a major.

You should meet with your academic adviser at least once per year, at minimum, to review academic progress and schedule classes.

How Academic Advisers Assist Transfer Students

Academic advising is an ongoing partnership between you and your adviser, empowering you to plan for your academic success. Advisers help with both the "here and now" as well as life after graduation.

By participating in academic advising, you will:

  • Gain a better understanding of your degree requirements
  • Identify options to meet your personal and educational goals
  • Be well-informed about Oakland University’s academic policies and procedures
  • Have an increased awareness of campus resources
  • Have knowledge of the range and scope of experiences available outside the classroom
  • Understand that academic success is a personal choice
Your First Advising Appointment

Transfer Student Orientation Part Two is based on your major and will serve as your first academic advising appointment. During this appointment you will meet with an academic adviser and register for classes.

Some majors will attend a group orientation where they will register in a computer lab with multiple academic advisers, faculty and staff, while others make an individual appointment in their advising unit.

At the end of this online orientation, you will be prompted to schedule to attend Transfer Student Orientation Part Two based on the school or college for your major. Specific instructions will be given to assist you in scheduling your first advising appointment.
