Michelle D. Southward, MA, MSA
Director, Academic Advising and Student Services

My professional career at Oakland University began in 2001 as an Admissions Adviser for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. After four years in Admissions and completing my Master of Arts degree in Counseling, I advanced my career and started working in the Center for Multicultural Initiatives office and worked as a Retention Coordinator. In 2006 I was promoted to the position of Assistant Director for the Center for Multicultural Initiatives. I served in this capacity for two years before accepting a position, as the Advising Coordinator for the School of Health Sciences. I was later promoted to the role of Director.

During my graduate coursework, I was awarded the King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship.

Senior Academic Adviser

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Western Michigan University (WMU) in 2002 and my Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Oakland University (OU) in 2010. My professional journey in Higher Education began in 2002. Since then, I have had the pleasure of serving in various facets of higher education with the majority of my work experience being in advising, student recruitment, enrollment and retention in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at WMU and OU respectively. In 2012, I accepted a position with WMU in the Exploratory Advising Office where I gained invaluable experience as an Academic Adviser until my return to Oakland University in 2015 where I now serve as the Senior Academic Adviser in the School of Health Sciences.

I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in Education at Michigan State University in 2012 and her Master of Arts in Counseling at Oakland University in 2015. I am passionate about student success and began working in Higher Education as a Graduate Assistant at the First Year Advising Center. I then had the opportunity to work in various roles around campus until I was granted the opportunity to become an Academic Adviser in the School of Health Sciences.

Academic Adviser

I earned my Bachelor of Applied Arts Degree from Central Michigan University in 1999 and a Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership (with a focus in Student Affairs) in 2009. I started my professional career working as an Admissions Representative at Cleary College and then spent the next 10 years working in the Undergraduate Admissions Office at The University of Michigan-Dearborn.  I left there as an Assistant Director in 2011. I began at Oakland University (OU) in February of 2011 as a Program Coordinator in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and then after 3 years moved over to the First Year Advising Center (FYAC) as an Academic Adviser.  I served in the FYAC for 2 1/2 years I am now an Academic Adviser in the School of Health Sciences.

Academic Adviser

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Individual Studies in 2011 from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Arts in Counseling in 2014 from Oakland University. During my time at both institutions, as an undergraduate and graduate student, I had the opportunity to serve in vary supervisory roles. I completed the specialization in Student Affairs while completing my graduate education.  At that time, I was afforded the opportunity to work as an academic advising intern for the Bachelor of Integrative Studies program office.

In 2014 I earned my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics from Wayne State University. I had the privilege of teaching Pre-K, third and fifth graders from various schools within Metro-Detroit. My professional experience in higher education began in the Office of Student Success and Experiential Learning Center (OSSELC). In the OSSELC I was fortunate enough to research student persistence and sense of belonging among Southeast Asian students and work with a variety of students across Oakland University's campus. I obtained my Master of Education in Higher Education Leadership from Oakland University in April of 2017.

Adviser for majors in Applied Health Sciences & Health Sciences concentrations Integrative Holistic Medicine, Nutrition and Health, & Pre-Pharmacy.

Leadership Coordinator 

My educational background consists of my Bachelor of Arts degree in Mandarin Chinese and French languages from Calvin College in 2014 and my Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership: Higher Education/Student Affairs from Eastern Michigan University in 2017. I was introduced to the field of student affairs through my undergraduate work as an Academic Coach. In my graduate experience I continued to work in academic support as an Introduction to University Instructor and a Success Coach. I also gained experience as an intern within study abroad at Eastern Michigan University and academic advising at Wayne State University. In addition to my role of Leadership Coordinator, I currently work as a GroupX Instructor at Oakland University’s Recreation Center.
