Michigan Reading Recovery (RR) teacher leaders met with Dr. Mary Lose, Director of the Reading Recovery Center of Michigan at Oakland University on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 for a day of professional learning and continuing certification as RR teacher leaders. The teacher leaders continued their learning by participating in the Reading Recovery Council of Michigan 25th annual institute, November 17-18 at the Somerset Inn, Troy. On November 17, one of the world’s top authorities on education, school reform, and educational leadership, Dr. Andrew Hargreaves, the Thomas More Brennan Professor in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College delivered the keynote address. On November 18, beloved author of over 700 books for children, Joy Cowley of New Zealand, presented the keynote address. During the two-day institute, internationally and nationally recognized RR experts from the U.S. and Canada presented featured sessions to school administrators, teacher leaders and RR and Literacy Lessons teachers. The institute was sponsored by the Reading Recovery Council of Michigan and the Reading Recovery Center of Michigan at Oakland University.
Developed by New Zealand educator Dr. Marie M. Clay, RR is a short-term intervention for children at risk of failing to learn to read and write in the first grade. The success of RR resides in the professional learning model: university faculty train and professionally develop teacher leaders who, in turn, develop teachers to work with these lowest performing first grade children. Teachers trained in RR apply their expertise in daily one-to-one lessons with children and apply their expertise in work with many more children during the other part of their instructional day in small group and classroom settings.
Oakland University is one of only 18 universities in the United States and the only one in Michigan, to serve as a RR university training center. Since its establishment in 1991, RR has trained over 1,436 teachers who have served almost 109,670 Michigan first graders.
