Dove Academy of Detroit students Dig It!

Dove Academy of Detroit continues to cultivate its academic offerings by using an exciting “hands on approach” to inquiry based learning. Recently, the students worked alongside volunteers from Dig It Organic Soil (“Dig It”) to build garden beds on the school grounds.

Dig It offers bulk nutrient rich soil to Michigan growers that is both economical and low carbon footprint.

For the Dove students, this project was more than planting seeds in the ground. Dig It donated the organic soil and volunteers helped to plant “seeds of knowledge” by allowing students to apply classroom skills to real life. Volunteers used soil biology to teach science and, students applied their math skills to measure and cut wood for garden box construction. The program also imparted social consciousness by teaching students how to grow food and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
