The Oakland Symphony Orchestra (OSO), Oakland University’s orchestra-in-residence, will present its first concert of the 2019-20 season at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6 in Varner Hall.

“As we open our 2019-20 season, it is my sincere pleasure to once again collaborate with Dr. Tian Tian, associate professor of piano at Oakland University, who will perform as soloist on The Yellow River Concerto for piano and orchestra,” said Dr. Gregory Cunningham, professor of music and director of the OSO.

“This brilliantly virtuosic concerto for piano draws its thematic material from Xian Xinghai’s eight-movement Yellow River Cantata; a work completed during the Sino-Japanese war, replete with Chinese folk songs originally utilized as a means of promoting national identity during a turbulent time,” he added.

The program will also feature an Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Op. 21 by Felix Mendelssohn; and the iconic Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

“A concert not to miss for sure,” Cunningham said.

One of OU’s “hidden treasures,” the OSO is comprised of professional musicians from throughout Southeastern Michigan and Northern Ohio, OU students and OU faculty.

The OSO performs most of its concerts on the OU campus in Varner Hall, with its final annual performance held in Orchestra Hall in Detroit in collaboration with the Oakland University Symphony Chorus.

Tickets for the Oct. 6 performance are $22 general or $12 for students, and can be purchased online at etix.com or in person at the Varner Hall box office.

Tickets purchased by phone or online will be held at will call at no additional charge. Everyone must show ID when picking up tickets.

Varner Recital Hall is located at 371 Varner Drive. Maps of the campus are available at oakland.edu/map.
