Macomb-OU Incubator offers new cybersecurity class

Oakland University’s Macomb-OU Inc. has launched a program aimed at helping Macomb County teachers learn best practices in cybersecurity education, an area that has become more important as technology-related data and security threats increase.

The course, Cybersecurity Essentials for Educators, is offered at the Velocity Hub of the Michigan Cyber Range, a Sterling Heights-based facility that provides expert staff and cutting-edge tools to develop and disseminate best practices in cybersecurity training and cybersecurity itself.

"This course provides its participants with a broad knowledge of cybersecurity career opportunities, earning potential, and a roadmap for developing their students’ career paths in cybersecurity,” said Matthew McMurray from Macomb-OU Inc.

“They are exposed to a wide variety of open source security tools that assist in the establishment and maintenance of secure networks, and they receive hands-on experience with setting up and configuring modern network appliances.”

The course content includes access to a wide variety of teaching resources; career, degree, and certificate knowledge; information security basics; ethical hacking and penetration testing; Linux exposure; cybersecurity frameworks and government regulations; cabling and networking; intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS); security information and event management (SIEM) systems; and dark web exposure.

Instructors also get hands-on experience in a cutting-edge environment, and are able to apply their knowledge immediately in the classroom.

“I’m very excited to be part of the cybersecurity essentials course and learn hands-on and engaging student activities,” said James Wagner, an instructor with the Macomb Intermediate School District. “This course will help my students and myself further grasp the world of cybersecurity and prepare for future careers and self-protection in this digital age.

“While there is a lot of information online to read and review, the applications and content really sink in when students ‘dig in’ and have an opportunity to apply and use what they have read,” Wagner added. “I’m very eager to learn about additional hands on activities in the cybersecurity essentials course.”

The program was developed in collaboration with Oakland University’s Department of Professional and Continuing Education (PACE). PACE, in a continuous effort to respond to industry and employer demands, partners with organizations to design custom programs to meet their various workforce development and training needs.
