Since June 2018, David McCallum has worked for Custom Biogenic Systems, where the main mission is keeping things cold – freezing cold. The company serves an array of clients whose work depends on state-of-the-art cryogenic equipment. They include pharmaceutical and biotech firms developing vaccines against COVID-19. At his job, McCallum uses computer software to design equipment that allows for safe storage and transport of these and other climate-sensitive materials.

Upon recommendation by the Office of Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Britt Rios-Ellis, and with support of President Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, the Oakland University Board of Trustees unanimously approved a request to appoint David Garfinkle, Ph.D.; Zissimos Mourelatos, Ph.D.; and Barbara Oakley, Ph.D. to the rank of Distinguished Professor at the formal February meeting. The appointment is effective August 15, 2021.

The November edition of the OU Magazine featured two SMTD stories: Matthew Carlsen (BFA '20), was featured in an article, Constructing a Skillset, where he discussed how joining OU’s musical theatre program helped him turn his childhood passion for costume design into a reality. “The faculty welcome mistakes, viewing them as growth opportunities — thus creating a supportive and friendly environment,” Carlsen said. Jai Carrero (acting major) and Ja’Laaiyah Gordon (dance minor) were also featured in Voices that Matter, an article about OU students of color enduring and overcoming challenges in the hopes of aiding future generations. “If you want to see the change, be the change,” Carrero said.

OU’s Varner Hall to undergo ‘much-needed’ renovations as part of $45 million project

With a focus on promoting interdisciplinary research among students and faculty, and engaging the public with diverse perspectives, Oakland University has established a new Center for Evolutionary Psychological Science. The Center will foster collaborative research within and across colleges and schools at OU, and also with faculty and students at other universities, both nationally and abroad.

Nearly 300 students from a variety of health-oriented academic programs recently took part in Oakland University’s fifth annual Interprofessional Education Workshop on opioid abuse. Although this year’s event was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, it featured plenty of insights into the challenges and opportunities health professionals have to deliver the highest quality of patient care.

Dr. Nikhil Patel, chairman of the Academic Board of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) since 2019, is an experienced senior consultant cardiologist, deputy chief of medicine and cardiovascular lead practicing at the East Sussex Healthcare Trust in England. Dr. Patel has more than 20 years of clinical experience and spent time on Tuesday, Feb. 9 sharing his medical insights with about 65 students of the Oakland University Honors College and guests.
