Lean Leadership certificate available in hyflex format

Fri Jul 8, 2022 at 09:39 AM

Oakland University now offers a 16-credit, three-semester, hyflex Lean Graduate Certificate program for those in any sector or workplace who want to enhance and extend their leadership knowledge, explore the Lean tenets and establish tools and competencies to impact their career. The Lean Leadership program is run by the Department of Organizational Leadership in the School of Education and Human Services

Jessica Jannaman, a recent Lean Graduate Certificate participant, said the Lean Leaders program was purposeful and helped all learners develop themselves personally and professionally.

The Lean Leadership Program helped change me personally and professionally because it connected personal strengths and opportunities to my professional development. By recognizing my own opportunities and strengths personally, I was able to become more self-aware and grow myself professionally,” said Jannaman.

The Lean Leadership program is facilitated by experienced, interdisciplinary faculty, who give students hands-on, experiential projects to help them grow in the areas of leadership, critical thinking and communication. Students through simulations, case studies, site visits and guest lecturers.

“The faculty in the Lean Leadership Program are fantastic. They are not just teachers but mentors in each student’s development. Their experience in the technical content and understanding of real-world scenarios is extremely valuable,” said Jannaman.

In addition to learning through the faculty and experiences, students also have the opportunity to interact with each other and build connections with their peers.

“One main take-away I had from this program was learning from others. The Lean Leadership Program encourages students to interact and share how they have applied tools to their own projects. This not only helped me expand on my creativity but also helped me to learn beyond my own industry on how to apply tools,” said Jannaman.

Jannaman added that each class was an opportunity and allowed her to pause and reflect on her own day-to-day experiences and how the course content applied to it.

The Hyflex course is a mix of online learning combined with three, in-person intensive sessions per semester. The in-person component is scheduled for Friday afternoons through Saturday mornings.

The cohort program is completed in three semesters, beginning in the Fall and ending in Summer I. By the end of the program, participants can earn up to three Lean Leadership Certificates and a Graduate Certificate in Lean Leadership from Oakland University, home of the Pawley Lean Institute. Students also have the option to complete lean belts and certificates after completing the program.

Those interested in further study in the field can work complete a fourth semester for a 20-credit hour complete cognate for the Ed.D. in Leadership.

This program has greatly benefitted my career through developing me as a leader. Other programs I have taken were focused on highly technical development while the Lean Leadership Program is targeted at developing leadership skills and learning how to apply them in the real-world. Soft skills and leadership development are truly what elevates those looking to grow professionally,” said Jannaman.
