March 23, 2020 2:00 p.m.

This morning the State of Michigan ordered a "Stay home, stay safe" executive order. In accordance with this order, effective Tuesday, March 24 at 12:01 a.m. the Oakland Center will be closed. This closure is effective until further notice.

Any meetings or events scheduled during this time will be canceled by the Oakland Center. If you wish to postpone or reschedule any meetings scheduled prior to April 13 please fill out the form available on this website or email For new meetings and events, all reservations must be submitted electronically with the first available date to book meetings of less than 10 people being April 14, 2020.  Meetings and/or events of 50 or more individuals will be canceled through May 25, 2020.

In addition to this closure, all retail food service operations, the bookstore, and the credit union will be closed. 
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time and will continue to provide updates as they are necessary on this web page. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future. 

March 18, 2020 11:00 a.m.

Effective today the Oakland Center will no longer be open on weekends through April 25. In addition, weekday hours will be reduced to 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and are still subject to change.

March 17, 2020 10:30 a.m.

The Oakland Center continues to monitor national and state recommendations and executive orders as they relate to the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19. On March 16, 2020 two new Executive Orders were signed that have direct impact on the Oakland Center operations.

The Oakland Center has closed the Bear Cave and Habitat on the lower level, and the dining portion of the Pioneer Food Court on the main level. All food purchased in the Oakland Center is take-out only, and in accordance with the new executive order no dining in the Oakland Center public spaces is allowed. Other areas of the Oakland Center are still open and available for students to study and connect to WiFi. Please ensure you are keeping adequate social distance of at least six feet between individuals while using the Oakland Center.

The State of Michigan has limited assemblages to under 50 individuals. The Oakland Center was already following CDC guidelines previously, and we will continue to follow these restrictions until further notice. Please note that meeting room capacities will be reduced by 50% to promote social distancing.

March 16, 2020 5:00 p.m.:

Frankie's Cafe, located inside Kresge Library, will be closed until further notice. Zingerman's, Panda Express and Subway continue to be available in the Oakland Center for limited hours (posted on this page).

March 16, 2020 11:00 a.m.:

Effective immediately, the Oakland Center will limit all meetings and events to groups under 50, following CDC recommendations. In addition, room capacities will be reduced by 50% to promote social distancing. This policy will remain in effect until further notice.

If you have an event in the Oakland Center you have already canceled/postponed or plan to cancel/postpone, and have not notified our office yet, please contact us as soon as possible. All groups hosting meetings and events in the Oakland Center will be contacted to confirm attendance and location based your meeting and/or event needs. 

The Oakland Center has taken further steps to combat the spread of COVID-19 by closing the following location in the Oakland Center:

Bear Cave on the lower level
Banquet Rooms, Founders Ballroom and all lounges and public spaces on the second floor

These changes will allow the administrative staff to focus on increased cleaning efforts in all spaces still accessible to the public. Please refrain from entering any location that the Oakland Center has closed.

The Oakland Center hours have been updated for March 16 through April 25. These hours are always available on the Oakland Center website, and will be posted at all entrances on Monday, March 16, 2020. The hours of operation are below:

Monday - Friday   7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday   12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Oakland Center, along with Oakland University, is actively monitoring the novel coronavirus COVID-19. For general campus information and announcements please visit

At this time, the Oakland Center is canceling all university-sponsored events with attendance greater than 50, and contacting all meetings and events with attendance less than 50 to confirm if those meetings and events are taking place.

The Oakland Center will continue to be open, but at a limited capacity. Hours of operation through Sunday, March 15 are included below. Please note that this information can change at any time, so please check back here for information regarding the OC operations.
