Colleagues,

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of Professor Emeritus James Hoyle, Ph.D., who passed away on January 11, 2021, at the age of 89.

Dr. Hoyle joined the Oakland University faculty on August 15, 1968, in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of English where he served until his retirement in April of 2001.

In the latter part of his career, he studied ancient Greek and Hebrew and developed and taught a course titled “The Bible as Literature.”

In addition to his love of literature, Dr. Hoyle had a penchant for the history of art, of America and of warfare. He enjoyed travel, with a particular fondness for exploring America and Europe by car.

A celebration of life has not been planned for Dr. Hoyle.

On behalf of the entire University community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Hoyle family and friends during this very difficult time.

Sincerely,

Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D.
President
