George CoonIt is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of Professor Emeritus George Coon, who passed away on May 10, 2021.

Dr. Coon joined the Oakland University community as the director of Graduate Studies on August 15, 1968. Prior to this, he was the sole teacher and janitor in a one-room schoolhouse in Weare Township, Mich. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Western Michigan University, and a doctorate of education from Wayne State University. He then served on the faculties of Wayne State University and Indiana State University.

During his tenure at Oakland, Dr. Coon also served as a professor of education, chair of Reading and Language Arts and dean of School of Education and Human Services. He retired in December of 1993.

Dr. Coon was a noted author of more than 60 educational publications, as well as the Stump Howie sports trivia series and two memoirs. He and his wife of 30 years, Geraldine, enjoyed traveling throughout the world, climbing mountains, swimming oceans, volunteering and often teaching.
