BioButton-Body@2xTo help protect campus from a COVID-19 outbreak, Oakland University is offering faculty and staff an advanced technology device called the BioButton, created by BioIntelliSense Inc. This wearable device is now available for pick up free of charge.

The BioButton monitors skin temperature, respiratory rate and heart rate at rest. The coordinating phone app combines this information with answers to daily screening questions to indicate if the user is cleared for regular campus activities or showing signs that might correlate with a COVID-19 infection.

The device is attached with adhesive to the upper left chest and can be worn 24/7 for approximately 30 days. The BioButton can also be used for Bluetooth contact tracing, alerting users of any contact with another BioButton wearer who has tested positive for COVID-19. This feature works whether the button is worn or just being carried.

By wearing this innovative device, campus community members can help ensure a healthier OU campus. The collective efforts of everyone help ensure on-campus activities can happen; including hybrid classes, labs and open facilities and buildings.

The OU community is also encouraged to wear the BioButton during the holiday break when contact is more likely with friends and family. Wearing the button during the holiday break will also create confidence that all faculty, staff and students are  coming back to campus healthy in January.

The BioButton can be picked up in-person with a Grizz number and Grizz ID card at the following times and locations:

Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Vandenberg Hall
  • Hillcrest Hall
  • Oakland Center

Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • The Rec Center
