Oakland University will kick off its “Welcome Week” celebration on Tuesday, Sept. 5, with a variety of activities and events planned for new and returning students.

Oakland University will kick off its “Welcome Week” celebration on Tuesday, Sept. 5, with a variety of activities and events planned for new and returning students.

 

“If OU students want to find out about what to do on campus before, between and after classes, check out this year’s Welcome Week activities,” said Jean Ann Miller, senior director of the Center for Student Activities and Leadership Development at Oakland University. “It’s a great introduction for new students and a reminder to returning students what and how to get involved in OU’s campus life.”

 

According to Miller, this year’s “Welcome Week” activities include:

 

Tuesday, Sept. 5

 

  • 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Orientation Part Two, Transfer Welcome Reception, New Student Convocation, Academic Open Houses & Involvement Fair on OU’s Main Campus. (Parking lots P-26 and P-29 will be reserved for incoming freshmen. Restricted access will begin at 11 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4 and continue throughout the day on Tuesday)

 

  • 5-7 p.m. – “Not Your Grandma’s Party” Welcome Back Reception on the north side of the Oakland Center. (Presented by AC at Oakland University)

 

  • 9:30-11 p.m. – “The Walk” to Meadow Brook Hall. Presented by Greek Life, “The Walk” starts at Hamlin Circle at 9:30 p.m.

 

  • 9:30-11 a.m. – “Bond” Fire at the bonfire pit at the Recreation and Athletic Outdoor Complex/P11 Parking Lot. (Presented by the Residence Halls Association)

 

Wednesday, Sept. 6

 

  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Pirates-themed Hump Day Carnival between North and South Foundation Halls. (Presented by the Student Program Board)

 

  • 4-6 p.m. – Academic Peer Mentor Meet & Greet at the Oak View Hall lobby and lawn. (Presented by University Housing)

 

  • 6-9 p.m. – Welcome BBQ at Elliott Tower. (Presented by the Center for Multicultural Initiatives)

 

  • 6-11 p.m. – Pre-Health Bonfire at the bonfire pit at the Recreation and Athletic Outdoor Complex/P11 Parking Lot. (Presented by the Pre-Medical Society)

 

  • 8-10 p.m. – Slam Poet Portia O and Open Mike Night at the Vandenberg Dining Center in Vandenberg Hall. (Presented by the Residence Halls Association)

 

  • 9-11 p.m. – NPHC Greek Fair and Yard Show in the Banquet Rooms at the Oakland Center. (Presented by the National PanHellenic Council)

 

Thursday, Sept. 7

 

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Grizzfest featuring student and Greek organizations, club sports, community businesses, and a volunteer fair. Located in the mall area in front of the Kresge Library. Rain date is Sept. 12. (Presented by the Center for Student Activities and Student Activities Funding Board)

 

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Tie Dying T-shirts in the mall area in front of Kresge Library. (Presented by the Student Activities Funding Board)

 

  • 1:30-3:30 p.m. – Find Your Fit at the Recreation Center. (Presented by University Recreation and Well-Being)

 

  • 3-5 p.m. – SOPE (Sustaining Our Planet Earth) Eco-Friendly Picnic on the south side of Vandenberg Hall

 

  • 7-9 p.m. – OU Women’s Soccer vs. Florida Atlantic at the Oakland Soccer Field. (Presented by OU Athletics)

 

  • 8 p.m. to midnight –Meijer Mania: Hop on a bus to Meijer and stock up on supplies and goodies for the year with fellow students and enjoy discounted prices, giveaways and meet OUs Grizz Gang. Meet at Hamlin Circle for free bus transportation to the Meijer on Rochester Road. (Presented by OU Athletics)

 

Friday, Sept. 8

 

  • 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – 9/11 Remembrance & Road March for Hunger at the mall area between North and South Foundation Halls, (Presented by Student Veterans of OU)

 

  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – North Foundation Hall Open House at North Foundation Hall

 

  • 3-5 p.m. – International Welcome Reception in the Banquet Rooms at the Oakland Center. (Presented by the International Students and Scholars Office and Academic Affairs)

 

  • 5-10 p.m. – 23rd Annual Sigma Pi Pig Roast and Student Program Board Pirates-themed Carnival on the north side of the Oakland Center. (Rain date: Sept. 11)

 

  • 8-10 p.m. – Outdoor movie featuring “The Princess Bride” on the north side of O’Dowd Hall. (Presented by Student Video Production)

 

Saturday, Sept. 9

 

  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Jump Start for New Students in the Banquet Rooms at the Oakland Center. (Presented by the CSA Leadership & Volunteer Center)

 

  • 4 p.m. – Welcome Weekend Charity Football Game – Football Club vs. OU Faculty & Staff at the Recreation and Athletic Outdoor Complex. (Presented by the Football Club)

 

  • 7-11 p.m. – Fall Welcome Event featuring comedian Adam Grabowski and the Cell Phone Smackdown game show in the Banquet Rooms at the Oakland Center. (Presented by the Center for Student Activities and the Residence Halls Association)

 

Sunday, Sept. 10

 

  • 1-4 p.m. – Sorority Recruitment Orientation in the Banquet Rooms at the Oakland Center. (Presented by Collegiate Panhellenic Council)

 

  • 8-10 p.m. – Outdoor movie featuring “Beauty and the Beast” on the Oak View Lawn at Oak View Hall. (Presented by the Residence Halls Association)

 

“Welcome Week connects OU students to Oakland University and being a Golden Grizzly,” Miller said. “There’s something for everyone, plus lots of free food, OU swag, and other giveaways all week long.”
