The 17th Annual MaTilDa Awards Dinner
The Department of Music, Theatre and Dance held its 17th Annual MaTilDa Awards "red-carpet" dinner in the Oakland Center Banquet Room on Sunday, April 17 2016 to recognize all of this year's honorees.
The Distinguished Community Service Award was given to Dr David DiChiera, founder and artistic director of Michigan Opera Theatre, who first came to Michigan to join the music faculty of the newly founded Oakland University, which was his base as he launched his drive to establish Detroit as one of the country's premier opera cities. Both Jackie Wiggins' introductory remarks about his work and his acceptance speech drew a standing ovation. Read more.

Working in the Arts: May 2016 MTD Alumni News
If you missed the April campus visit of alumna and jazz great Regina Carter (BA '85), you can see her appearance on Fox Channel 2 here. This year Regina and the Oakland Jazz Quartet played two gigs, one at the Carr Center in Detroit, and another in Varner Recital Hall which was designed for children and was very well attended. In the audience were the youngest students on campus, those from the Lowry Center. Everyone is invited to our family events, including our upcoming children's theatre show The Adventures of Pinocchio.  It's inspiring to see young minds experiencing the performing arts live, and a lot of fun, and you don't need to be accompanied by your own young people to enjoy it!  Read more.

May 2016 MTD News

Theatre students Jason Maracani and Emily Hadick competed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. during the weekend of April 16 and 17 at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) National Awards. "It was an absolutely amazing experience," said Emily. "I met some incredible performers and learned from a wide range of professionals. We took classes from casting directors, singers, choreographers, artistic directors, and more. I learned a ton about the professional theatre scene in Washington DC as well as the NYC area."

Jason received The Honorable Mention in the scenic design category for his work on A Doll's House. It was presented to him by Rafael Jaen and Jesse Dreikosen, president and vice president of the Theatre Design wing of the KCACTF. Emily won an additional scholarship for the Open Jar Institute Summer Intensive.
