Participants in the Guitars Not Guns program show off their new guitars and prepare for their first lesson

OU Music Instructor Brings Guitars to Pontiac's Children's Village

Oakland University guitar instructor Bret Hoag and his students Jessica Julian and Keith Kunkel are meeting with a group of 16 young women at Children's Village in Pontiac to launch a new community initiative called Guitars Not Guns. "It was totally awesome," said Hoag. "The girls were enthusiastic and the staff on hand were fantastic."
Hoag has been a driving force in forming the first Michigan chapter of Guitars Not Guns, which has the slogan: One Child. One Guitar. One Miracle.

This 501(c)(3) organization uses music as a catalyst to encourage children and teens to use their creativity to foster personal development and to help divert them from destructive influences. The participants are provided with guitars and lessons with qualified teachers at no cost. Once the classes are finished, the new musicians keep the guitars.

Working in the Arts: July 2016 MTD Alumni News
Did you see the recent Michigan Opera Theatre production of The Magic Flute? Because he was completely immersed in a fabulous dragon costume, you may not have known you were watching recent musical theatre alumnus Jake Daley (BFA '16) make his MOT debut! OU costume design lecturer Leslie Littell, who saw the show, said the dragon was slain on stage and had to be immobile for some time. But Jake did return for the curtain call, and without his costume, so he got to appear on one of Detroit's most venerable stages undisguised.
Sam Rohloff (BFA '13), another musical theatre alumnus, is continuing his national tour of Kinky BootsAt a recent stop in San Francisco he was interviewed by The Bay Times.

Thomas M Suda

July 2016 MTD News
The entire Music, Theatre and Dance family was shocked to learn about the June 13, 2016 death of a much loved member of our faculty, Thomas M SudaTom began teaching theatre classes at OU in 1995 and over the course of the next 20 years he mentored and befriended untold numbers of young actors. In the days following his death, his personal Facebook page was filled with hundreds of moving messages from old friends and former colleagues and students, expressing their sadness and their deep affection for him. We've chosen one such message to share with you, as a tribute to Tom from us all.  "As a theatre major in college, you build close ties with your professors and other students. Even though we move on in life, those connections still exist, so when one breaks, we all feel it. The world lost a shining star, a truly beautiful soul, our Thomas M. Suda. It's amazing to see just how many lives he touched so profoundly in his many years as a theatre professor at Oakland University. Tom, you will be truly missed." Read more
