Session Title: "What Does it Mean to be a Doctor With a Disability?”

Session Description:
Across the nation, and the globe, trainees and physicians with disabilities are increasing in numbers and the value of their inclusion in medicine is becoming clear.
In this talk, we will review the landscape for trainees with disabilities across the continuum, discuss the value of this diverse group in medicine, and discuss the possibilities for an inclusive and accessible physician workforce.

Session Objectives:
Describe the benefits of educating, training, and employing individuals with disabilities.
Demonstrate an understanding of the landscape for trainees and physicians across the continuum.
Describe actions, language, and processes that create inclusive training environments.

Lisa Meeks, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Learning Health Sciences and Family Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, co-creator of the social media campaign #DocsWithDisabilities, co-host of the Docs With Disabilities Podcast, and executive director of the DocsWithDisabilities Initiative. She is widely considered the leading expert on disability inclusion in medical education, her work has been published in leading medical journals, including the NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, and Academic Medicine. Her work has also been featured on NPR in the Washington Post, CNBC News, Bloomberg Law, and TIME magazine.
Dr. Meeks also regularly collaborates with health professions associations and is the lead author of the “AAMC Special Report: Accessibility, Inclusion, and Action in Medical Education: Lived Experiences of Learners and Physicians with Disabilities,” and co-developer of the AAMC Disability Webinar Series. She currently serves as disability lead for the ACGME Equity Matters Initiative. Her most valued contribution to academic medicine is mentoring the next generation of disabled physicians and scientists and creating space for DocsWithDisabilities to thrive.
