Overview

Admission Requirements

Applications for admission to any of the Department's graduate programs are considered on a year-round basis. Application forms may be obtained online or in person from the Office of Graduate Admissions, 520 O'Dowd, Oakland University, Rochester, MI 48309.  Contact the Office of Graduate Admissions at (248) 370-2700 or  gradinfo@oakland.edu.

The students admitted into the program must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with at least 3.0 grade point average, with a major in one of the mathematical sciences, engineering, computer science, the physical sciences, the biological sciences or the health sciences.

Applicants should send their application documents directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions . Please check the Graduate Admissions website  for detailed information on graduate admission criteria and supporting application materials. International applicants are required to submit an extra document which can also be found on the Graduate Admissions website.

An application file is only forwarded to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for consideration after it has been completed.

Students who wish to register for courses before being admitted to a program should indicate at the time of application that they wish to be placed in "Special Graduate" status while their file is being processed. A student is permitted to register for at most 12 credits prior to regular admission to a program.

Please consult the Graduate Catalog for the most up-to-date information.
Teaching Associateships

There are several Teaching Associate positions available to well-qualified full-time students enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral program. Teaching Associates receive a full tuition and fee award for up to 24 credits, and an additional stipend. These tuition awards and stipends are for the academic year (eight and a half months); additional support may be available during the summer. Teaching Associates are expected to complete a Master's degree program in two years and are typically assigned teaching responsibilities for one class in one semester and two classes in the other semester.

In addition to completing the standard admission forms, applicants for Teaching Associateships should also send a letter to the Graduate Coordinator which includes a statement of career goals and a description of any prior experiences which might help us assess potential teaching effectiveness. Applicants should possess excellent English language communicative skills; in particular, international students who have been appointed recently have had TOEFL scores of at least 600. For full consideration applications for the coming academic year should be completed by March 15; however, late applications will be considered if positions are still unfilled.
