Mary Joyce Pagano Memorial Award

Mary Joyce Pagano was a member of the 1963 Charter Class of Oakland University. She taught physics and chemistry at Pontiac Northern High School for 17 years and was a role model for young teachers. Joyce, as she was known, was keenly aware of the importance of a good education, and held a strong belief that those willing to learn and achieve should receive whatever assistance necessary. She took a deep personal interest in her students and her good counsel and advice were often sought.

In addition to her teaching passion, Joyce was a devoted wife and mother of two children. She loved horses and upon her retirement raised several horses on a farm in North Carolina. Joyce had a natural flair for computers and the Internet, realizing their potential for transforming the classroom experience and improving overall quality of life. She also found time for swimming and gardening. In memory of Joyce Pagano’s exceptional contribution to teaching and to sustain her legacy, family and friends established a scholarship fund to support teacher preparation students doing their field placement in Pontiac or other urban settings.
