Janice Schimmelman
Professor of Art History
Department of Art and Art History

A member of the OU faculty for the past 33 years, Schimmelman first came to campus as a student in 1967.  As an art history major, she was introduced to works that would become her passion and the basis of her life’s work.

Specializing in American art – specifically, architectural treatises available in 18th century America, books on art published in America through 1865 and 19th century American photography – Schimmelman has authored five books and monographs, and dozens of scholarly articles and book reviews.

Schimmelman teaches a variety of courses in the art history program, including American Art, Baroque Art, English Art, Introduction to Western Art II, and Renaissance Art in Italy. She also serves as the coordinator of student awards and scholarships for the department, and as a member the departmental Review and Promotion Committee.

Away from the classroom, Schimmelman collects a variety of 19th and early 20th century American antiques. Her vast personal collection of American tintype photographs served as the basis for her book, The Tintype in America, 1856-1880, published by The American Philosophical Society in 2007.
