Training and Lab Certification
Training
Oakland University laboratory workers using biohazardous materials are required to receive mandated training prior to beginning any work. The specific training required is dependent upon the materials and procedures to be used, as detailed in the IBC project application.Required training typically includes some or all of the following:
- General Laboratory Safety (Right to Know)
- Biosafety
- Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control
- Hazardous Materials and Waste Management
- Shipment of Biological and Hazardous Materials
You must contact EH&S at ext.4196 to schedule your training. Additional details may be found at the Laboratory Safety and Compliance Training page.
Laboratory Certification
Prior to initiating work on a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) or greater project, the Principal Investigator (PI) must contact the Biosafety Officer (BSO) to schedule an audit. This audit will confirm the implementation of biosafety measures described in the project’s IBC application. If there are any non-compliance issues discovered, the PI must correct them and schedule a follow-up audit with the BSO. Once all audit findings are in compliance, the BSO will issue a memorandum of Laboratory Certification and work on the project may proceed.
You must contact the BSO, Domenic Luongo, at ext.4196 or by email (luongo@oakland.edu) to schedule your audit.
