Alumni Scholarship in Political Science, International Relations, or Public Administration

DescriptionEligibility Criteria
  • Minimum overall GPA 2.5
  • Political Science, International Relations, or Public Administration major. To qualify as a major for the purposes of this award, a student must have completed at least 12 credits of political science (transfer of equivalent credits from other colleges/universities is allowed) and have officially declared a PS, IR, or PA major.
  • Sophomore, junior, or senior standing. A student must be attending OU the fall semester following the award decision.
  • Strong writing skills as demonstrated by a submitted writing sample.

Major Selection Criteria

The Alumni Advisory Board is particularly interested in awarding this scholarship to students with strong writing skills as demonstrated by a writing sample, and evidence of campus and/or community leadership/involvement. The Advisory Board strongly recommends that applicants make use of the OU Writing Center before submitting an application. (Note: Be sure to allow adequate time to make an appointment with the Writing Center before the application deadline.)

Applicants Must Submit to Prof. Woo, 421A Varner Hall:
  • Completed application form.  
  • A writing sample.
  • Current resume.
  • Signature of two faculty references, one of which must be a member of the Political Science Department faculty.
Finalists may be required to attend a short interview with members of the Political Science Department Alumni Advisory Board.

Completed applications are due in the Political Science Department office no later than 5 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2015.

Award

A $1,000 award will be made each year, which will be awarded to the winner’s OU student account and applied toward OU tuition in the following fall semester. In addition to the $1,000 award, the scholarship recipient will also receive an Apple iPad Mini, courtesy of the Alumni Advisory Board. Again, awards are restricted to only those returning to OU the following fall semester.

Department of Political Science Faculty Scholarship in Political Science, International Relations, or Public Administration

DescriptionApplication Criteria

Eligible students must be declared OU undergraduate political science, public administration, or international relations majors, with a minimum of 12 credits of political science – or equivalent transfer courses from other colleges/universities.

Students must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.3, and a minimum GPA of 3.3 in the major.

Application Materials

Application forms are available by following the link below.

Students must submit to Prof. Woo in 421A Varner Hall, a completed application by 5p.m. Monday, February 16, 2015. A complete application includes:
  • Completed application form.
  • An essay of no more than three pages (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font) describing their qualifications for the scholarship. The essay should address the student’s academic qualifications, their service to the OU campus and the larger community, and how their undergraduate degree fits into their future goals and plans.
  • Completed recommendation forms from two OU faculty members, at least one of whom should be a member of the Department of Political Science, who support your application. These will be submitted by faculty. Please remind them of the need to do so promptly!
Scholarship awards will be decided by the Department of Political Science Scholarship Awards Committee. The decision of the committee is final.

Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, color, religion, national origin, age, or physical handicap.

Expected graduation date must be no earlier than December 2015.

Oakland University Department of Political Science Charlene and Michael Kochenderfer Scholarship in Political Science, International Relations, or Public Administration
