Doris J. Dressler Scholarship

Description
The Doris J. Dressler Scholarship was established by Doris J. Dressler to support undergraduate students majoring in English at Oakland University. The award may be given to an Arts and Sciences major from another Humanities department if an English major does not meet the qualifications. The award is supported by an endowment administered by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Defining the Awards: Scholarships are awarded annually to undergraduate students majoring in English, Creative Writing, and Cinema Studies.

Eligibility Requirements for the Dressler Scholarship in English:

  • English, Creative Writing, or Cinema Studies majors
  • Preferably in Junior or Senior Year
  • Hardworking student demonstrating definite academic promise and financial need. (Financial need will be determined by coordinating with Oakland University Financial Aid Office.

Application and Materials:

  1. Applicants must complete a cover sheet and provide a personal statement arguing your worthiness of this award, demonstrating a hardworking student with definite academic promise and financial need.
  2.  Provide letters of recommendation from two faculty member.
  3.  Provide a copy of current official OU transcript.
  4.  Download and complete application form
  5.  Return application materials to:

Holzbock Humanities Scholarships

Description

The Holzbock Scholarships were established by Werner Holzbock to support undergraduate students majoring in humanities disciplines at Oakland University.  The award is supported by an endowment administered by the College of Arts and Sciences.  Department of English majors are invited to apply for The Werner Holzbock Humanities Scholarship in the amount range of $1,000-$2,000 for two academic semesters of fall and winter. 


Eligibility Requirements:
  • Candidates should have completed 62 credits (i.e., be entering their Junior or Senior Year)
  • Must show a 3.0 GPA overall and at least a 3.6 in major
  • At least 16 of the English credits must have been earned at OU
  • Provide recommendation letters from two Faculty members
  • Provide a letter explaining why the candidate should be a recipient of this scholarship and how studying the chosen major has influenced the candidate's intellectual perspectives
  • Provide a copy of a current OU transcript
Application:

Applicants should complete the application form and write a letter arguing their worthiness for the award. Submission must include your email, phone number, and mailing address. Direct this letter to the following address:

    Mr. and Mrs. Roger Kyes Scholarship

    DescriptionThe Kyes Scholarship was established by Mr.and Mrs. Roger Kyes to support undergraduate students majoring in English at Oakland University. The award is supported by an endowment administered by the College of Arts and Sciences.

    Defining the Awards: Scholarships are awarded annually to undergraduate students majoring in English.

    Eligibility for the Kyes Scholarship in English: Applicants must match the following criteria:

    • Completed 62 credits (i.e. be entering their Junior or Senior Year)
    • A minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and at least 3.6 in their major
    • Earned at least 16 credits in their major at Oakland University

    Application and Materials:

    The Cheryl Cole Pope Scholarship

    DescriptionDefining the Awards:  The Cheryl Cole Pope Scholarship will benefit Oakland University graduate students earning a Master’s Degree in English. 

    Cheryl Cole Pope was a dedicated oncology nurse who appreciated literature and the arts, ardently believed in life-long learning, and practiced service to her community. The Cheryl Cole Pope Student Gift Fund honors Ms. Pope’s dedicated work ethic, commitment to professional excellence, service to her community and practical generosity to those in need. This scholarship commemorates her delight in literature and film, and her lively interest in learning new things every day.  The Cheryl Cole Pope Student Gift Fund offers academic opportunity and the celebration of intellectual discovery in the spirit of its namesake.

    Eligibility Requirements for the Cheryl Cole Pope Scholarship in English:

    • Be admitted to or enrolled in the MA English program (students may apply to the program and scholarship simultaneously).
    • Preference may be given to students who demonstrate financial need as confirmed by the Financial Aid Office and indicate need in their application to the English Graduate Program Committee.
    • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate community service.
    • Students who foster a sense of community among graduate students in the M.A. in English Program, are especially encouraged to apply, and their efforts will be considered in the selection of the awardee.

    Application and Materials:

    Students who want to apply should submit transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a letter stating how they fulfill requirements for this scholarship.  Deadline for submission is May 2, 2016.

    The Jenna Elyse Balabuch Memorial Study-Abroad Award for English Majors

    DescriptionThe Jenna Elyse Balabuch Memorial Study-Abroad Award for English Majors

    Application Deadline: April 4, 2016

    Defining the Award: The Jenna Balabuch Study-Abroad Award for English Majors provides one scholarship award annually, in memory of OU English major and English Honor Society member Jenna Balabuch, to an OU English major planning to study abroad; the award is intended especially for participants in the British Studies at Oxford Program.  The amount of the award will depend on the amount available in the fund but will ordinarily be approximately $1,000.

    Scholarship Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered:

    • Be an undergraduate English major with a minimum of 24 credits at the time of departure for study abroad.
    • Be accepted in a study-abroad program. 
    • Preference will be given to participants in the British Studies at Oxford Program, in which Jenna Balabuch had intended to participate and which the fund was created, in part, to support.
    • Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

    Application Process

    • Submit a scholarship application including cover sheet and  personal statement
    • Provide an academic reference form completed by a member of the OU faculty.
    • Provide a personal reference from someone (not a parent) who knows the candidate well (e.g., employer; coach; someone in a community organization, club, or church group).
