Students Advice
At the end of the Winter 2000 term I asked the students in the course Introduction to Linear Algebra (MTH 256) to think for a while and write their advice to future students in the course. The following are the replies, typed almost exactly as given. Taking their advice will help you!
"Get a study partner immediately! Read the book + study theorems, know the def's and learn how to do the hard problems at the end of the sections."
"Be sure to never get behind on the homework. Get help when you need it. Be prepared before class, so you can follow the lectures easier. Just try to relax when doing different problems, don't panic."
"Do homework ASAP (easier said than done). Ask questions in class about the homework. "
"Work hard in the beginning. Get the basics. It will make the rest of the class go much smoother."
"My advice to someone taking this class next term would be to keep up with the homework and attend the lectures. The lectures really helped with understanding the material and practicing the homework problems prepared you for the test. I wish I would have kept up with the homework better than I did."
"The biggest tip I have is to not get behind on the homework, and refresh your mind by going back to previous sections. Also, talk to the prof. If you do not understand anything at all."
"Read the book before class. Try to stay ahead of the material."
"Do all the homework. Have a good understanding of the homework problems. Take advantage of the office hours to get help with problems if required. Attend all lectures."
"Do all your homework on time. Keep up."
"Don't skip classes - attend all the lectures.
Make sure you do all the homework and understand it. Read each chapter Š before doing the homework for that section.
Don't memorize problems - understand them.
Use the Academic Skills Center to practice doing old exams."
