Jessica L. Shumake’s research on community-based assessment practices and the rhetorical and affective dimensions of archives has been published in Reflections: A Journal of Public Rhetoric, Civic Writing, and Service Learning and The Writing Instructor.

Shumake’s pedagogy is energized by community partnerships with local schools and non-profits to support students to experience writing with and for audiences beyond the classroom. She has served as a leader on an i3 Department of Education grant on rural literacy. Shumake is the Book Review and New Media Editor for the Community Literacy Journal.

Prior to starting at Oakland University in August 2017, Shumake worked for two years as an Assistant Professor in the School of Information at the University of Arizona where she taught digital storytelling courses within the Wildcat Writers secondary-university collaboration program.
