Retiring OU professors to deliver 'Last Lecture'

Retiring Oakland University English professors Jane and Robert Eberwein will deliver a “Last Lecture” on Monday, April 9. The event will be held at noon in Meadow Brook Theatre, with a reception immediately following in the Oakland University  Art Gallery from 1-2 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Both Jane and Robert Eberwein have taught at OU for 38 years.

Jane Donahue Eberwein
Jane Donahue Eberwein earned her Ph.D. from Brown University in 1969 with her dissertation on neoclassical forms and attitudes in American poetry. She is the author of a book on Emily Dickinson, the editor of an anthology of early American poetry, and the editor of “An Emily Dickinson Encyclopedia.” She has contributed mightily to many committees and programs at Oakland University, always seeking to support both students and faculty in making OU the very best that it can be. She was a founding member (and for many years, coordinator) of the Oakland’s American Studies concentration, and her long association with the University Senate has made her something of an unofficial university historian.

Robert Eberwein
Robert Eberwein earned his Ph.D. from Wayne State University in 1968 with a dissertation on the imagination and didactic theory in 18th-century English literary criticism. In the early 1970s he ventured into the teaching of film, where he has been seriously ensconced ever since. He is the author of three books on film and has edited a fourth; another book, “Armed Forces: Masculinity and Sexuality in the American War Film,” is forthcoming this summer from Rutgers University Press. He maintained his enthusiasm for scholarship and teaching even while leading the English Department as chair from 1982-1991. Robert has likewise been a stalwart supporter of OU and an advocate for students, many of whom know him also as one of the founding members and the co-director of OU’s concentration in Film Aesthetics and History.

The Last Lecture is an OU tradition that gives retiring faculty members an opportunity to reflect on their careers, the history of the university, and how they envision Oakland’s future. The program also gives the OU community an opportunity to thank departing faculty members for their contributions.
