New student programs offer leadership, service opportunitiesBy Samantha Skovran, media relations assistant
New students heading to Oakland University this fall will get the opportunity to enhance their leadership and teambuilding skills by participating in the Jump Start or Grizz Tracks programs.
Both of these events give first year students a chance to meet and interact with other Oakland students while simultaneously learning to lead through volunteer work and teambuilding activities.
Jump Start is a one day leadership course for transfer students scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Throughout the day, students will get to participate in activities, connect with other students and student leaders, as well as learning how to get involved on campus from faculty and staff.
This event is hosted by the Center for Student Activities and Leadership Development. To register for this event, visit oakland.edu/csa
For first year students who are looking for the opportunity to have fun, meet people, and move in early, Grizz Tracks is the event to consider.
Grizz Tracks is an overnight event set for Thursday, Aug. 30, through Saturday, Sept. 1.
The event offers an outdoor adventure program and allows students planning on living in University Housing to move in early. Those students must meet between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30 at Hamlin Hall. Grizz Track leaders will meet students and help with check in.
Later on Thursday, all students are invited for a meet, greet, and eat at 5 p.m. in Bumpers Game Room on the lower level of the Oakland Center.
On Friday, Aug. 30, participants will split up and spend the remainder of the weekend at the outdoor adventure, which is limited to the first 50 students who sign up. These students will get to spend the weekend participating in group activities including a high ropes course and bonfire, as well as creating connections between group members and enhancing teambuilding skills.
The cost is $145 and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday, a high and low ropes course, overnight stay in a cabin, and transportation to and from Camp Tamarack.
