OUCARES featured in Mitch Albom's Heart of Detroit video series
The Oakland University Center for Autism Research Education and Support (OUCARES) was recently featured in a Heart of Detroit video segment in recognition of the many programs and services it provides to the surrounding community. Founded by Detroit-based writer and media personality Mitch Albom, Heart of Detroit is a public service project and WDIV Channel 4 feature profiling inspiring leaders in the Metro Detroit area.
In late May, Albom came to campus to interview staff members about the work they do in support of those with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. Dr. Janet Graetz, associate professor of education, and OUCARES Director Kathy Sweeney discussed the prevalence of autism and stressed the importance of inclusion.
“We acknowledged the role of parents and the need for more community awareness and acceptance,” Sweeney added. “We also shared a brief glimpse of our past experiences with autism and how the path of each of our lives directed us toward work with this population.”
OUCARES integrates academic course work, knowledge and research with hands-on work in the community to prepare professionals to be leaders in the autism community. Through these academic and service programs, Oakland University also provides supportive individual and family programs. OUCARES, housed in the School of Education and Human Services, encourages the exchange of ideas relating to the education and support of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as provides services and support needed to improve daily living.
