International conference to focus on improving credit analysis

The recent global financial crisis has exposed weaknesses in risk management, generally, and in credit analysis, specifically. The School of Business Administration (SBA) is working to advance knowledge of credit analysis by coordinating and sponsoring its first international conference bringing practitioners and academics together on Oakland University's campus July 21 to 23, 2011.

With the purpose of stimulating discussion on improving existing models of analyzing credit risk and encouraging improvements in risk management, the conference will include internationally recognized experts from academia and industry.

The conference will include key insights from financial experts on methods of evaluating credit, panel discussions featuring a mix of experts from academia and practice, and research presentations.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Edward Altman, New York University, speaking on "Important Contemporary Topics in Global Credit Analysis"
  • Sean Keenan, GE Capital, on practical analysis of individual loans and credits
  • Uday Rajan, University of Michigan, on the importance of using “soft” information in credit analysis
  • Erik HeitField, Federal Reserve Bank, on the limitations of using only statistics in credit analysis

Other speakers and discussants include: Joseph Breeden (Strategic Analytics), Lawrence Mielnicki,(PNC), and Patrick Sperti (Fifth Third Bank).

The deadline to register for conference is July 8, 2011. The $195 registration fee includes attendance and discussion at all workshops and events. A related reception and dinner, featuring Ed Altman, at OU'S Meadow Brook Hall is also available separately. Online registration is available here.

The conference is hosted by Enterprise Risk Analysis Institute, a part of the Center for Business Research and Education (CIBRE), and the Department of Accounting and Finance at Oakland University's School of Business Administration. The SBA plans to hold the conference biannually.
