OU receives grant for Japanese studies program

Oakland University's Japanese studies program recently received a $2,000 donation from the Japan Business Society of Detroit (JBSD) Foundation.

"The students who studied in Japan in the last few years have demonstrated that they are truly the best ambassadors between Japan and the United States," said Seigo Nakao, director of the Japanese studies program at Oakland University. "We are pleased to be able to continue to support OU students in 2002 with half of JBSD Foundation's generous gift to us."

The other half of the grant will be allocated for the purchase of books in Japanese for Japanese major and minor students. The school needs these supplies because of steady growth in enrollment in the Japanese program, Nakao said.

Oakland University has decided to expand its current program from a minor to a major by fall 2003.
