The revised edition of Department of Music, Theatre and Dance Chair Jackie Wiggins' classic text, Teaching for Musical Understanding (1st edition, 2001, McGraw-Hill; 2nd
edition, 2009, Center for Applied Research in Musical Understanding), is now available through the Oakland University Web site.
A Professor of Music Education, Wiggins is known for her work in constructivist music education theory and
practice, children’s musical creativity, and technology in the music
classroom. She has been an active clinician, presenter, and author
in local, state, national, and international settings. As a researcher, she studies the nature of children’s musical thinking
as reflected in their creative processes and decisions when engaged in
composing and improvising, and the role of the music teacher and
instructional design in these processes. Among her additional publications are:
Composition in the Classroom (1990, MENC), Synthesizers in the
Elementary Music Classroom (1991, MENC), and numerous journal articles.
Teaching for Musical Understanding offers a learner-centered,
constructivist approach to the practice of teaching music. Rooted in
current theories of learning and years of classroom experience, the
text brings innovation and real-world practicality to music and music
teacher education classrooms.
The second edition draws on more contemporary theories of learning and
expands the social constructivist vision set forth in the first edition
to reflect more contemporary work. The new edition also offers
additional lesson and unit plans for more advanced students.
