Seasons end at NCAA, Mid-Con tournaments
Both OU's men's and women's soccer teams ended their seasons Friday, Nov. 16., with a loss to Cincinnati in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament for the women and a loss to UMKC in the first semi-final match of the Mid-Continent Conference Tournamanet for the men.
The women's team ended its season at 16-4-1 after losing 3-2 to Cincinnati at the NCAA Tournament in South Bend, Ind.
Despite Friday’s loss, the Golden Grizzlies made school history as it was the first team to make it to the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level. The Golden Grizzlies also claimed their third consecutive Mid-Continent Conference regular-season championship and their second Mid-Con tournament championship during the 2001 season.
The men's team ended its season with an 8-6-3 overall record.
In the first semi-final match of the 2001 Mid-Continent Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament, 150 minutes of play couldn’t decide a winner as neither Oakland (No. 2) nor UMKC (no. 3) could push across a goal. UMKC won a penalty kick shootout, 4-3, to advance to the Mid-Con Championship match. This was the first shootout in Mid-Con Tourney history.
