Jennifer Gilroy, senior associate registrar at Oakland University, was recently honored by her colleagues with the 2009 Outstanding Administrative Professional Award. Established in 1984, the award recognizes an administrative professional who has delivered exemplary performance on the job. A prize of $1,000 accompanies the award.

“It’s an incredible honor to get recognition from your peers,” said Gilroy. “I’ve been around to see most of the people who’ve been given the award and it’s very flattering to be thought of in that same light.”

Gilroy has a long history with the university, having arrived on campus as a student in 1969. She began working in the Registrar’s Office in 1983 and has held numerous posts, including grade change clerk, degree auditor, transfer credit evaluator and records coordinator. She was promoted to assistant registrar for records in 1993 and served as acting registrar during the 1997-98 academic year. In 1999, she settled into her role as senior associate registrar.

“I’ve been focused a lot on academic records,” said Gilroy, adding that she spends a great deal of time maintaining the university’s Banner Student Information System so that students can track their academic progress online.

Gilroy, who works alongside 20 full-time staff members and several casual employees, was quick to cite her colleagues as the most rewarding part of her job. Registrar Steve Shablin says that Gilroy's impact on the OU community makes her especially deserving of the Outstanding AP award.

“I am so proud, as is my staff in the Office of the Registrar, to call her a colleague and more importantly a friend,” said Shablin.

Gilroy's husband, OUPD Lieutenant Melvin Gilroy, was honored with the outstanding AP award in 2006.
