OU's first homecoming set for Feb. 6-7Oakland University will celebrate its first official homecoming Feb. 6-7 during Come Home to OU.
“I see this weekend becoming one of Oakland’s marquee events to showcase the legacy and spirit of the university,” said Gary Russi, OU president. “We’re expecting the event to become a much-anticipated fixture on the OU calendar.”
The Homecoming Steering Committee, comprised of representatives from university departments and student organizations, met throughout the summer semester to collaborate on the development of a diverse events schedule that integrates programs and activities to meet the interests of Oakland alumni, faculty, staff and students.
“Current students, alumni and long-time friends and supporters will be able to create more cherished memories of OU,” said committee chairperson Glenn McIntosh, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of student life.
The weekend’s events, centering around OU men’s and women’s basketball games, will include:
- Pep Rally
- The entire OU community and friends are invited to this kick-off event for homecoming weekend, which will feature appearances from coaches and players from the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Images dance team, the cheerleading team, and OU Pep Band will perform. There will also be a variety of games and prizes for Golden Grizzlies fans.
- Tailgate Party
- Celebrate the Golden Grizzlies spirit in anticipation of the homecoming basketball games. Held directly across from the O’rena in heated tents, this event will offer attendees a variety of delicious tailgate foods.
- Family Fest
- This carnival-like event will feature a range of activities spread throughout the Recreation Center. The emphasis will be on having fun in a family-friendly atmosphere which will include putt-putt golf, interactive video games, face painting, inflatable stations for youths, and arts and crafts. The event will also offer plenty of photo opportunities with the OU mascot, The Grizz.
