Housing opens Pre-Nursing Living Learning CommunityBy Rebecca Wyatt Thomas, OU Web Writer
The School of Nursing and University Housing have developed a living learning community for first-year students who have declared nursing as their intended major. Students will share a floor in East Vandenberg Hall, take class together, participate in events and activities as a group and prepare to become nurses.
“The Pre-Nursing Living Learning Community provides students an opportunity to become more connected to the nursing program and other students before they are even admitted,” said Helena Gardner, program coordinator in University Housing. “The students will take class together, live together and be immersed in their studies.”
The community is open to admitted OU students with a pre-nursing major. Students must be able to enroll in CHM 104 (Introduction to Chemical Principles), BIO 111 (biology), RHT 150 (Composition) and PSY 100 (Foundation of Contemporary Psychology). Students must also have a 3.0 or higher recalculated high school GPA or ACT composite score of 20 or greater. Preference may be given to students who took chemistry or biology in high school and received a B or better. Students must also meet the requirements to live on campus, including completing a Housing Application packet.
The Pre-Nursing Living Learning Community will be housed in East Vandenberg Hall, which also houses the Honors Community. The co-ed floor will be open to 45 pre-nursing students. An honors student or nursing student will serve as the community’s resident assistant. An all-freshmen floor, the community will still be part of OU’s First-Year Experience.
Students in the pre-nursing community will have special perks, such as being able to attend nursing events only open to admitted nursing students. They will receive mentors from the School of Nursing Dean’s Circle.
“Students who live in the community will get to connect with the School of Nursing, faculty and other students in a way they couldn’t as a commuter student,” Gardner said.
Students interested in participating the Pre-Nursing Living Community this fall can apply by contacting University Housing at (248) 370-3570.
