Area of Recognition: Service

Laila Guessous obtained a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to host a Research Experience for Undergraduate Program at Oakland University during the summers of 2007, 2008 and 2009. In this 10-week program, the students perform research on energy-related topics under the supervision of Oakland faculty and industrial mentors. One of the goals of the program is to increase the participation of women in engineering. Toward this end, 10 of the 18 students (from 15 different U.S. institutions) have been female. In addition, results from the program were presented at the 2007 American Society of Engineering Education Conference and eight students have given conference presentations on their research findings.
