Eddie Cheng is the 2006 recipient of the Michigan Mathematical Association of America's Distinguished Teaching Award. Cheng is deeply involved in his role of teacher, mentoring students at all levels both inside and outside the classroom. Cheng is one of a small number of university mathematics faculty who are able to publish with graduate and undergraduate students and is the only one here at Oakland to publish with high school students. The Oakland University Summer Mathematics Institute, anonymously funded, has grown and flourished under Cheng’s directorship, providing college courses and credit for the top high school students in the state.
