Janice Schimmelman

Professor of Art and Art History

The American Philosophical Society, the oldest scholarly association in the United States, has accepted Janice Schimmelman’s book on the American tintype for publication. This is a prestigious venue and an appropriate one for a book that represents the culmination of many years of study and collecting.

The book will fill an important need for scholars of American social history, history of art and history of photography as well as collectors and enthusiasts. American tintypes are a rich source of information about American social history and popular art, yet they have never to date been the subject of a comprehensive published study.
