OU participating in Super Bowl festivities

By Dawn Pauli, OU Writer

The Super Bowl may be the hottest ticket in town, but the coolest event will be the downtown Rochester “Super City” Ice Sculpture and Shopping Spectacular.

The Detroit Super Bowl XL Host Committee chose downtown Rochester, Oakland University’s hometown, as one of only six communities for “Super City” designation as part of the celebration surrounding the Super Bowl in Detroit, Sunday, Feb. 5.

Rochester’s Ice Sculpture and Shopping Spectacular will feature more than 40 ice sculptures throughout the downtown area, with special promotions throughout the city’s unique shopping district, on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

An Oakland University Golden Grizzly ice sculpture also will be on Main Street in front of the former Mitzelfeld’s Department Store.

“The Super Bowl is a significant event to the Detroit area and we’re proud to take part in this fun, unique event in Rochester,” said Mary Beth Snyder, vice president for Student Affairs. “I’m inviting our students, alumni, faculty and staff to visit Rochester to take part in the Super City festivities.”

Oakland is proud of its hometown, Rochester, named 39th in a list of the top 100 cities in which to live by Money Magazine and CNN Money in 2005. Oakland University and the City of Rochester formalized a partnership in 2003 to partner on a variety of reciprocal business and academic ventures.

Other Rochester Super City activities include:

Thursday, Jan. 26 Super City Taste of Downtown Participating eateries will offer special sampler menus and live music.

Friday, Jan. 27 Super City Art Downtown Tour the galleries of downtown Rochester, featuring traditional, contemporary, sculptures and hand-blown glass art.
