Are freshmen allowed to have cars on campus?
All Oakland University students are allowed to have cars on campus and parking is free.

Are freshmen required to live on campus?Freshmen may choose to live on or off campus. We do encourage students to reside on campus. Living in an OU residence hall/apartment is a great way to meet people and make new friends. Students who experience residence hall life typically excel in their academics. Can I pick a roommate?You can indicate a roommate preference when you apply for on-campus housing. Both students should request one another. If both individuals agree, we will try to accommodate the request. We strongly encourage roommates to apply early to better the chances of being assigned to the same room. Due to space limitations, roommate requests cannot be guaranteed. If you do not have a roommate in mind, we will pick one for you based on the personal preferences you indicate when you submit your contract. (return to top) |
Have the residence halls ever been renovated?Yes! Housing dedicates approximately 20 percent of the annual operating budget to renovation. Projects have included new roofs, new windows, elevator upgrades, renovated bathrooms and kitchens, new carpeting and paint, upgraded light fixtures, new interior doors, etc. (return to top) |
How do I join a student organization?Find out about OU's student and Greek organizations by visiting the Center for Student Activities Office, through the Involvement Fair after New Student Convocation, Student and Greek Organization Days held during Welcome Week in the Oakland Center, and attending the meetings and programs sponsored by student and Greek organizations. How will I receive housing information and when can I expect it?After submitting a completed online housing contract, students are placed in room assignments in the order in which contracts are received and validated. Students will receive notification of room assignments via OU email by early August. Because on-campus housing fills VERY quickly, we recommend submitting your contract as early as possible to increase your chances of assignment. Students can apply online at oakland.edu/applyforhousing.

How will my housing charges be billed?Dorm room, apartment and meal charges are billed and due three weeks into the semester along with tuition. (return to top) |
If I am a student traveling from far away, can I stay on campus before or after my orientation program?If you are traveling from a distance and need to arrive on campus before orientation, contact University Housing at (248) 370-3570. Housing typically needs one week notice prior to your arrival. There is a nominal charge for the night's lodging. Also, there are hotels conveniently located near campus for family members. What amenities are included in the room and board rate?Many services are available to residence hall students for no additional charge. Some of those services include:
Cable Television
The cost of basic cable is included in the housing room and board rate. Each residence hall room is wired for cable. To access this service, you must have a cable-ready television with a coaxial cable.
Computer /Internet Service
Students living on campus who have their own computers can access the wireless local area network to connect to the university’s computer system, Internet, e-mail, discussion groups and other computer data resources. A computer lab also is located in Hamlin Hall for the exclusive use of residence hall students. You can find more information about the system online.
Laundry Service
Each residence hall has laundry rooms for resident use only. Laundry service is included in the room and board rate for the residence halls; therefore, the machines are free of charge.
Meal Plans
Students living in the residence halls must select a meal plan, which is included in the total cost for room and board. Each plan gives students the opportunity to eat at any of the dining locations on campus. Arrangements also can be made for box lunches and sick trays. (return to top) |
What is there to do on OU's campus? How do I find out about activities?There are educational, social, cultural and recreational programs offered all the time on OU's campus. To find out what's happening and when, check out the CSA website. You can also check out campus bulletin boards, look at banners hanging in the Oakland Center, read The Oakland Post, listen to WXOU 88.3 FM, watch OUTV on Comcast Cablestation channel 74, stop by the service desk in the Recreation Center, and OU's home page and Campus Calendar. When do I submit a housing contract?While we do not have a specific deadline for submitting contracts, students are encouraged to submit contracts as early as possible. Housing contracts are available online www.oakland.edu/applyforhousing.
