Green IT

We value responsible use of all resources. OU IT professionals have adopted a Green Strategy. Our GreenIT strategy includes:

  • Emphasizing power efficiency
  • Virtualization to minimize hardware
  • Using equipment so that refresh cycles are purposeful
  • Recycling equipment
  • Minimizing paper
  • Turn it off initiative

What are we doing?

  • Implemented centralized power management for office computers using Group Policy Preferences (GPP) from Microsoft. GPP is a free framework that manages the power management features on computers and monitors from a central location, allowing an organization to save on energy costs.
  • The School of Business Administration has implemented power management for the lab PCs (152 units). These systems shut down at 10:30 P.M. and wake up at 7:40 A.M.
  • Implemented print management PrintWise in public printing locations. Location managers report a significant drop in the amount of printing and the amount of waste paper.
  • Implemented VMWare as a virtual server strategy. Over 90 virtual servers have been implemented, reducing the number of servers needing electrical connectivity.
  • The university uses a flexible desktop and laptop refresh cycle, encouraging purchase suited to purpose rather than a fixed-life replacement.
  • The School of Business Administration has implemented paperless processes to support advising, including a walk-in scheduler, online Appointment scheduler and student override petition and review.
  • UTS Technical Services is using Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) as the primary Linux server platform; RHEL has won multiple green awards.
  • UTS Database Applications is engaged in a project to create and support a repository of online, enterable and routable forms. To access online forms, go to the OU Web Forms Menu and search by a keyword or list all forms for a department.
