Guest Students

If you’re spending the summer in the metro Detroit area, keep moving toward graduation as a guest student at Oakland University. You can choose from more than a thousand diverse courses in several convenient sessions — courses that can transfer to your home institution.  schedule of classes

Criteria

To attend Oakland University as a guest student, you must be in good standing at your home institution and must be enrolled at an accredited college or university.

Cost

Tuition rates below are for undergraduate guest students (summer 2014) 

In-state: $353.75/credit hour
Out-of-state: $795.75/credit hour

Apply

  • Complete Part I of the Michigan Uniform Undergraduate Guest Application Form
  • Bring your completed Guest Application to your home institution's Registrar Office for completion of Part II.
  • Mail your application to: Oakland University, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 101 North Foundation Hall, Rochester, MI 48309-4475. Please allow a minimum of five business days for Oakland University to process your Guest Application.

Guest students receive all advising from their home institution and are responsible for requesting that a transcript of grades be sent to the home institution after courses are completed.

Guest status is valid for one semester only. If you wish to attend more than one semester, a guest application must be filed for each semester to be attended.

Admitted

Once you are admitted to OU as a guest student, you should download an enrollment guide.

Register for classes

Once you set up your SAIL account, you can register for courses (see sidebar for instructions on how to activate your accounts).  Click here for instructions on how to register

Web registration for guest students in summer 2014 begins April 4, 2014.

If you receive an error message while registering for a course, please contact the academic department offering the course. You can view a list of departments online at oakland.edu/academics. You can also contact Registrar Services for assistance at (248) 370-3450 or visit them at 100 O'Dowd Hall (find on map). Some courses may require specific prerequisites; a member of the department staff can verify that you meet the prerequisite and allow you to register.

Pay

Oakland will send an email to your OU email account when your bill is ready to be viewed and paid online using eBill. You will need your SAIL ID and PIN to access the eBill system. The eBill home page provides a brief overview of your current account status, recent and past billing statements, recent activity on your student account and available payment plans. Payments can be made online through eBill, in person or by mail.

Apply
Depending on your home institution, you will fill out one of two graduate guest student applications.

  1. Students admitted to degree programs at institutions other than the Michigan institutions listed below should apply using the Graduate Application for Admission.  
  2. If you are admitted to a degree program at one of the following Michigan institutions, use the Graduate Guest Applicant — from an institution in Michigan
    • Andrews University
    • Aquinas College
    • Calvin College
    • Central Michigan University
    • Eastern Michigan University
    • Grand Valley State University
    • Marygrove College
    • Michigan Technological University
    • Northern Michigan University
    • Saginaw Valley State University
    • Sienna Heights College
    • University of Detroit Mercy
    • University of Michigan
    • Wayne State University
    • Western Michigan University

Guest Students should consult their advisors at their home institutions regarding the ability to transfer specific credits to their programs. Enrollment for all guest students is limited to 12 credit hours. Activate Your Grizzly ID and NetID Accounts
Once accepted as a guest student at Oakland, you will have to activate your accounts in order to register for classes, pay your bills and receive important notifications about billing. 

To activate your Grizzly ID 
aka the "G-number" 
(your SAIL account)

  1. Access SAIL using the quick link at the top right of the home page.
  2. Under the login area, click "New student? Get your NetID and password." 
  3. Select "Reset/Change your Grizzly ID PIN."
  4. Follow the directions to change your PIN and/or security question.

To activate your NetID 
(your @oakland.edu email)

  1. Access SAIL using the quick link at the top right of the home page.
  2. Under the login area, click "New student? Get your NetID and password."
  3. Select “Obtain your NetID account or reset your NetID password.”
  4. Follow the directions to create your NetID password.
Forward your @oakland.edu e-mail to another email
Make sure you're receiving important updates, like when to pay your bill. Here's how to forward your Oakland e-mail.
  1. When you're logged into your Oakland e-mail, go to the top right and click "Mail settings."
  2. Click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP on the top.
  3. Add a forwarding address that you check most often.
  4. Select "Forward a copy of incoming mail to:" and select the e-mail address you want your Oakland e-mail to forward to.
  5. Scroll down and select "Save changes."
