    • For students arriving for their first semester in the winter or spring term, the annual cost  will be pro-rated (reduced)
    • All international students will be automatically billed for the university sponsored health insurance plan
    • It is important that you read and understand your policy
    • Coverage under this plan is available for spouses and children and these rates can be obtained online at UHCSR.

Applying for a Health Insurance Waiver

If you have alternate equivalent insurance you may apply for an exemption through the waiver process. The waiver process is open from August 1 through September 16, 2014 for the new academic year.
    Waiver application
must be completed at the beginning of each academic year or the first few weeks of your first semester.

The waiver process will exempt you from purchasing the university sponsored health plan under two conditions only:
    1. You are insured by your government sponsored U.S. based health plan (Saudia Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Iraq, Amideast, Oman)
    2. You are covered under a U.S. employer based health plan as a dependent of your parent or spouse. In this case, you must purchase the medical evacuation and repatriation plan separately  ($75).
Policies that do not meet one of the two conditions above will not be accepted as adequate insurance coverage.

After you apply for a waiver you will be instructed to bring a copy of your insurance policy with the schedule of benefits to the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) at 157 North Foundation Hall.

If Medical Evacuation & Repatriation (ME&R) are not included in the approved waiver policy, an additional Global Emergency Medical Assistance provided by FrontierMEDEX (from August to August) must be purchased for $75 through United Health Care. You must enroll in person at the ISSO.

Please be advised no other plans including your home country’s government sponsored health plan will be accepted, nor will plans like PSI or ISO.

    Health Insurance for J-1 Scholar

    • J-1 scholars must enroll in UHCSR health insurance in person at the International Students and Scholars office (157 North Foundation Hall) during check in with their international advisor
    • J-1 scholars that are staying at least 6 months and are paid by Oakland University will be enrolled in Priority Health insurance after the first 30 days

Health Insurance Options for F-2 or J-2 (dependents)

All F-2 dependents are strongly recommended by Oakland University ISSO staff to carry health insurance at all times. Serious accident and illness that may occur when a person is uninsured can result in many problems receiving adequate care and paying the extremely high costs of American health treatment..

All J-2 (dependents) are required by U.S. federal law to carry health insurance at all times. The minimum J-2 health insurance requirements are

    • Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
    • Medical evacuation must be covered in the amount of $10,000 minimum
    • Repatriation must be covered in the amount of $7,500, minimum
    • Deductible must not exceed $500 per accident or injury
    • Medical insurance must cover the entire period of time that the exchange visitor participates in the Exchange Visitor Program

The primary purpose of health insurance in college is to keep students in school so they can graduate and realize their professional and career dreams.

The Healthy Michigan Plan provides health care coverage to low-income Michigan Residents. Find out if you qualify here.

For out-of-state students, consider whether your current employer-provided insurance adequately covers your student.  If your student is attending an out-of-state school, your employer provided PPO may consider the health care providers in that state out of network, which will increase your out-of-pocket costs. An HMO plan may consider those same providers as being out of their service area.

The Young Invincibles, a national advocacy organization for young Americans between the ages of 18 and 34, provides a free online information toolkit to give students and families valuable information about health care coverage. Their Getting Covered website explains insurance options for students in every state and provides other resources for graduating young adults.

If you are turning 26 years old, moving to a new home, getting married, or having a baby, you may be able to enroll in health insurance! If you are facing one of these life-changing events, make sure that you get covered. Hurry–you may only have a limited time to get insurance!
