History of the STC

The Student Technology Center at Oakland University opened its doors August 31, 2005, and has quickly become one of the most popular locations on campus. In an effort to provide students with the resources and training necessary to succeed in both the classroom and the workplace, the Division of Student Affairs converted Oakland Center office space into a state-of-the-art facility providing the latest equipment and software.

Oakland University staff visited the campus of Bowling Green State University and modeled this new project after their existing center. In just three months, the space was completely renovated, new equipment was ordered and installed, and training curriculum was written.

The STC now provides 40 Dell computers and 8 Apple computers for student use. In addition, the center offers training on 13 software packages and loans out digital cameras, HD camcorders and laptops to students free of charge.

For the fall '06 and winter '07 semesters, the STC completed more than 1,100 equipment loans, more than 3,200 student mentoring sessions and had more than 53,000 student visits. The STC continues to be the headquarters for the promotion, instruction and support of technology literacy on campus and looks forward to serving students well into the future.

By aiding students in their academic and personal pursuits, the services available through the STC build and enhance technological skills that lead to success — in the classroom, workplace and life.
