Thomas D. Mahard, a long time special lecturer in Theatre at OU, has managed to combine his academic responsibilities with an active professional life, in theatre, on television, and in the movies. In 2020, Tom received a “Wilde” award, “For his career of exceptional work on stage and his lifetime of devotion to Michigan’s theatre community as an actor and teacher.” In 2022, Tom received Best Supporting Actor awards for The Sponsor at both the L.A. International Film Festival, Independent Shorts Awards, and at the IndieX Film Festival. Tom’s production company, TDM Productions, produced the film. A second film from TDM Productions is in post production, and is due out just before Christmas 2023.

Also in 2022, Tom recreated the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, for the 14th time at Meadow Brook Theatre, where he first performed in the fall of 1979, as Mr. Snake, in School for Scandal. Since that first show, Tom has performed in over 75 productions at MBT. 

Tom received his bachelor's degree from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and also studied Mime, in South Paris, Maine, with the great Tony Montonaro. Other influential teachers include, Bill Beard,Harry Mastrogeorge, Peter Thompson, Michael Shurtleff, Uta Hagen, and Kate Peckham.

Tom has taught acting privately, as well as teaching classes at U of M Flint and at Oakland University. Tom’s film and television credits are available on IMDb.
