Dr. Martin joined the faculty of Oakland University in August of 2017. She earned her Ph.D. in the Molecular and Cellular Pathology program at the University of Michigan, where her research focused on identifying risk factors for clinical infection with the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae. Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., she worked as a clinical microbiologist in the medical laboratories of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science from Michigan State University as well as certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist through the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification.

As a both an undergraduate and graduate student, Dr. Martin acted as a teaching assistant for multiple clinical laboratory science and microbiology courses. Her current scholarship interests focus on effective teaching practices and pedagogy for undergraduate science classrooms. Dr. Martin is particularly interested in incorporating game-based learning practices such as Reacting to the Past (RTTP). She is also interested in development of diagnostic tests for the clinical microbiology lab.

Dr. Martin is active at the state level with the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science where she has served on the Board of Directors in various roles since 2012. She is committed to their mission to assure excellence in healthcare & medical laboratory practices through promoting the profession, mentorship, and promoting standards in medical laboratory methods and research
