I joined the School of Health Sciences at Oakland University in 2009. Prior to working at Oakland University, I completed my PhD in Human Nutrition at Michigan State University.  I also have a BS in Psychology and a MA in Exercise Science from Central Michigan University.   My research focuses on prevention and improvement of chronic diseases in children, adolescents and adults in community-based settings.  I’ve done research in schools examining how wellness policies, the school nutrition environment (school breakfast, lunch, a la carte, vending machines), and school health climate influence adolescent dietary intake.  I am the community chairperson of the Healthy Pontiac, We Can! Coalition, which aims to increase healthy eating, physical activity, and tobacco-free living in the Pontiac community.  Since its formation in 2011, Healthy Pontiac has grown to include over 40 partnering organizations, has received state and federal grant funding worth over $338,220, and secured matching funds and resources worth over $178,486 to support nutrition and physical activity environment, policy, and program initiatives in a variety of settings.  I am also passionate about prevention of eating disorders and promotion of a positive body image, particularly in college students.   I enjoy both qualitative and quantitative research methodology and value utilizing a Community-Based Participatory Research model in which community partners are involved in all aspects of the research study.   My goal in research is to translate findings into policies, programs, and environmental changes that will directly benefit the community.
