Keane/Demarest Endowment for Berkley School District Student Scholarships
The Keane/Demarest Oakland University Endowment for Berkley School District Students, created by Dr. William Keane and his wife Geraldine Keane, benefits incoming freshmen from the Berkley School District. The donors have lived a life dedicated to helping others, particularly through the attainment of a quality education, and would like to help others gain a quality education at Oakland University.

Throughout his storied career, Dr. Keane served as the superintendent of the Berkley School District, superintendent of the Oakland Intermediate School District, associate professor of educational leadership in the School of Education and Human Services, and interim dean in the School. Mrs. Keane served as a general education and special education teacher in New York and in Clawson Public Schools in Oakland County.

When asked about creating the Keane/Demarest Endowment, Dr. Keane said, "when Gerry’s sister Irene Demarest passed away over a year ago, we thought about the best way to salute her life. We decided that an endowed scholarship of some magnitude at Oakland University for someone who wanted to be a teacher would be a perfect way to celebrate her life in perpetuity. Directing the scholarship to Oakland University was easy since I had worked at this university for sixteen wonderful years as a teacher, coordinator, department chair and interim dean. We then decided to target the scholarship on someone from the Berkley School District, where I had been fortunate to serve as curriculum director and superintendent for twelve years and where my children had achieved a superior education. This is a district and community where we still live and enjoy many rich memories."

Through the Keane/Demarest Oakland University Endowment for Berkley School District Students, Dr. and Mrs. Keane will support future educators in perpetuity.
