Research Funding

APPLYING
FOR FUNDING
SEHS RSC
GRANTS

There are resources available in the Dean's office that will increase an applicant's chances for funding. Whether applicants (SEHS faculty, staff or students) are hoping to obtain government (federal, state or local) funding or private funding from a corporation, foundation or individual, it is very important that the applicant meet with the appropriate people in the School.

Did you know the SEHS has endowed research awards for faculty? Visit the following for details.
  • Sidney W. Graber Memorial Award for faculty members conducting research in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, and/or the Lowry Center.
  • Harry Hahn Reading Award for full or part time faculty members in the Department of Reading and Language Arts. The Harry Hahn Reading Award may be used to pursue scholarly, teaching or service activities in reading, writing and language arts.
  • Jacqueline I. Lougheed Research Award for full time tenured faculty and tenure-track faculty to support research related to Women in Education or Women in Leadership.

The SEHS Development Office can help you:
  • identify potential funders
  • provide examples and templates to use when writing proposals
  • assist in gathering university documents, such as the tax id letter, financial records, and letters of support
  • edit proposals from the grantmaker's point of view to ensure your proposal is well written and concise
Communication with the Dean's office after the applicant has talked to his/her department chair or supervisor is intended to be helpful to the applicant by providing feedback that will assist in writing successful proposals.

A quick outline of the process is provided below. Further details and resources related to private funding can be asked of the SEHS Dean's office at sehs@oakland.eduIf you are not sure if the funding organization is private or public, or if you have questions about the grant process, contact the SEHS Development Project Manager Avni Thomas at x4247.
  • Applicant has an idea, project and/or program for which the applicant is requesting funding
  • Applicant sets up a meeting with the SEHS Development Project Manager to discuss the following:
    • Private funding sources - foundations and corporations
    • Proposal writing process at OU and in the School of Education and Human Services
    • General timeline, including when the applicant hopes to begin work and time to get signatures and approvals
    • Estimated dollar amount needed (a range is okay)
The Office of Research Administration manages funding requests from government sources, including local, state and federal levels.
