Electrical and Computer Engineering

Welcome to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department!

There are 16 tenure-track and 2 visiting faculty members in the department. As teacher-scholars, the faculty are Daniel N. Aloi, Ph.D., Chairexperts in their areas, actively engaged in research activities, and committed to mentoring students in educational and professional endeavors. At the undergraduate level, the ECE Department offers two ABET-accredited degrees, a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in electrical engineering and a B.S. in computer engineering. Our undergraduate programs emphasize the importance of hands-on experience; many courses are accompanied by laboratory sessions led by faculty and graduate students.

We also offer year-round undergraduate research experiences to introduce students to playing an important role in engineering the future, presenting papers at conferences, and publishing in academic journals. Our students actively participate in more than 10 electrical- and computer-related student organizations, teams, and clubs that enhance their experiences and offer regional and national design competitions. We are proud to share that our students took 1st place out of 45 international teams in the 21st Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition in 2013.

The Department offers five advanced graduate degrees: Master of Science (M.S.) in Electrical and Computer Engineering, M.S. in Embedded Systems, M.S. in Mechatronics, a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering. Graduate students also obtain hands-on experience in laboratories created in partnership with companies and government agencies. Graduate teaching and research assistantships are available.

Oakland University is located in the heart of Oakland County (25 miles north of Detroit, Michigan). It is the home of Automation Alley, Fortune 500 companies and small businesses including a concentration of technical centers supplying the automotive industry, and the US Army Tank Automotive Research, Development, and Engineering Center (TARDEC). At Oakland, students are in proximity to both local and global enterprises with opportunities for them to engage in cooperative education or internships while they are going to school.

The department has teaching and research labs for coursework, thesis work, research, and corporate use including an Automotive Antenna Range and a Scanning Electron Microscope sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation Program. During the summer of 2014, the ECE Department will be moving to the new Engineering Center, a 127,000-square-foot facility that will feature state-of-the-art classrooms and research space.

Thank you for visiting our page, we hope that you will contact us for a personal tour of the Department and laboratory facilities, or to meet with our students and faculty one-on-one. We look forward to meeting you here at Oakland University.
