Course Overview
This course offers an introduction and basic understanding of the psychological, social and environmental aspects of disability. Social-cultural, familial and personal influences that affect a person with disability will be presented.



Topics
  • How disability has been conceptualized historically and the resulting impact on societal attitudes, values and beliefs
  • Current legislation and pubic policy that impacts persons with disabilities, employers, educators and society Societal attitudes and barriers impacting persons with Autism, Aspergers, emotional impairments and learning disabilities
  • Counseling theory integration within various social institutions; skills appropriate for disability issues including psychological and social adjustment, environmental consideration, functional independence and social integration
  • Family issues and lifespan perspectives; community services, public agencies, advocacy groups, independent living movement
